Children and Adolescent Counseling

Overview

Children and families today are under enormous stress. Family marital difficulties, financial struggles, blended families, family care-giving responsibilities, health issues, and loss all affect children, in addition to increasing school responsibilities and pressures, learning issues, standardized testing, and demands of organized sports and activities with too little time, all combine to create a pressure-cooker for everyone.

To counsel younger children, we utilize the tools and techniques of Play Therapy.  Play Therapy is a way of counseling children that uses their natural language, play, to help them express feelings, deal with stress and anxiety, and learn coping skills that will help them throughout their lives. Play Therapy enables children to show the therapist their problems through their play, and through that play and the understanding and acceptance of the therapist, children can work through their problems.

For older children and adolescents, we use a combination of Play Therapy techniques and traditional research-based counseling tools, depending on the developmental needs of the client.

These techniques are effective in treating the following areas:

  • Adjustment difficulties

  • Behavioral problems

  • Family & relationship issues

  • Parent divorce/separation

  • Blended family issues

  • High family expectations

  • Grief

  • Trauma

  • Abuse

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • School and learning difficulties
